Degree Designation

BARCH - Bachelor of Architecture

The Department of Architecture offers a 160-credit, professional 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree (B Arch). This curriculum is designed to meet National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) standards, ensuring a robust educational framework that prepares students for the modern demands of architectural practice.

The program equips students with proficiency in 21st-century technologies essential for managing all aspects of the professional practice of architecture and related fields. To ensure graduates are well-prepared to be leaders in the industry, the curriculum emphasizes key areas such as comprehensive design thinking, architectural history and theory, integration of building systems, materials, and assemblies, building regulations, professional practice, building performance analysis, and sustainable design principles.

The curriculum fulfills NAAB student performance criteria in critical thinking and representation, building practices, integrated architectural solutions, and professional practice, in addition to providing a strong foundation in the liberal arts. The program’s emphasis on the integration of technical and design considerations is a key feature of the curriculum.

The culminating experience is a thesis project developed by the student in their fifth year. This project serves as a capstone to their educational journey and highlights their individual strengths and interests.

The BArch degree is widely recognized as one of the fastest paths to becoming a licensed architect. The program prepares students not only for professional success but also for meaningful contributions to the field of architecture. It is designed to build upon and integrate the college’s general education learning outcomes and the Architecture Department’s learning outcomes for the Bachelor of Technology and Associate in Applied Science degree programs.

Learning Outcomes

1. CRITICAL THINKING AND REPRESENTATION Graduates of the B. Arch curriculum are able to build abstract relationships and understand the impact of ideas based on the research and analysis of multiple theoretical, social, political, economic, cultural and environmental contexts. They explore and express these ideas in a wide range of media including architecture, writing, drawing, and three-dimensional models.

2. BUILDING PRACTICES Program graduates have a broad understanding of the technical skills and knowledge necessary in the practice of architecture and related fields, including creating building designs with well-integrated systems, comprehending constructability and principles of environmental stewardship, and conveying technical information accurately. Graduates understand general business principles of architecture, including management, advocacy, and the requirement to act legally, ethically, and critically for the good of the client, society, and the public.

3. INTEGRATED ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTIONS Program graduates can synthesize a wide range of variables into an integrated design solution.

Accreditation

In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture offered by institutions with U.S. regional accreditation, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an eight-year term, an eight-year term with conditions, or a three-year term of initial accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

The New York City College of Technology's Department of Architecture offers the following NAAB-accredited degree program:

Requirements

Prerequisite

First-Year Students:

  • The CUNY Application is required for admission to a bachelor’s program at New York City College of Technology.

  • Admission to the BArch program is competitive and requires additional materials described on the department website.

Advanced Standing Students

Degree requirements in the first three years of the B. Arch and B. Tech at City Tech are identical; therefore, B. Tech students may apply to change their program of study to the B. Arch as advanced standing students. Advanced standing students must meet the following requirements and apply with additional materials as described on the department website.

  • A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

  • A minimum grade of C in architectural design, visual studies, and building technology courses.

  • A minimum of 60 credits completed toward the Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Technology

  • Enrollment in, or completion of, ARCH 3512 Architectural Design V, ARCH 3531 Building Technology IV, and ARCH 2481 Structures II

  • Participation in two formal advisement sessions scheduled by the department

Transfer Students

Students who have attended another university or college, have completed coursework at that institution that they wish to receive credit for at City Tech, and who are interested in being considered for the B. Arch Program at City Tech must meet the following requirements and apply with additional materials as described on the department website.

  • A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

  • A minimum grade of C to receive transfer credit for architectural design studios, visual studies classes, and building technology courses

  • A minimum of 60 credits completed toward the Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Technology

  • No transfer credit will be given for ARCH 3512 Architectural Design V or ARCH 3531 Building Technology IV. These courses must be taken at City Tech.

AND
Complete at least 1 courses in the following Course Sets:

course, course, or higher calculus-track mathematics course recommended

AND
Complete at least 1 courses in the following Course Sets:

Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. In DegreeWorks, a double duty course displays and fulfills both requirements, but the credits count only once; the elective area will adjust automatically. Specific options for double duty courses may be listed here or noted in the degree map below.

Bachelor's degrees and AA and AS degrees require six flexible common core courses: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area.

Complete at least 6 courses in the following Course Sets:

All baccalaureate students starting at City Tech or transferring in with 30 or fewer credits, in addition to the common and flexible core courses, will also complete the following 12 credits: one course in speech/oral communication; one interdisciplinary course; and two additional liberal arts courses or, in BTech programs, additional liberal arts credits to reach a minimum total of 42 credits in general education.

In meeting general education requirements overall, students must take at least one advanced liberal arts course or two sequential courses in a world language. An advanced course is at the 2000 level or higher and has a prerequisite in the same or a closely related discipline. Examples of courses with prerequisites in closely related disciplines are: ECON 1101 and SOC 3301; PSY 1101 and SOC 2403. Transfer students with more than 30 earned credits or a prior degree have modified college option requirements, as noted on the Transfer Credit page.

Students at New York City College of Technology must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level, one from general education requirements and one from the major; and two additional courses designated WI for the baccalaureate level, one from general education and one from the major. Transfer students and those who have earned a prior degree may have part of this requirement waived. Please consult the Degree Requirements page for additional information.
