AAS - Associate in Applied Science

The associate in applied science (AAS) in Computer Information System (CIS) prepares students for entry-level careers in: computer programming, database programming and administration, web programming, and systems/network administration and support.

Several courses within the program are available in hybrid and fully online formats, allowing students to balance their studies with professional and personal commitments.

Learning Outcomes

Students demonstrate:

  1. An ability to apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of the discipline to computer systems technology activities.

  2. An ability to apply a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to computer systems problems that require application of principles and practical knowledge.

  3. An ability to conduct standard tests and measurements, and to conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments.

  4. An ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team.

  5. An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in both technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.

  6. An understanding of the need for and an ability to engage in selfdirected continuing professional development.

  7. An understanding of and a commitment to address professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity.

  8. A commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement in professional practice.

Student Learning Outcomes: Discipline-Specific

Students demonstrate knowledge and hands-on competence in:

  1. Applying and evaluating technological solutions to solve real-world problems.

  2. Basic problem solving using various fundamental algorithms.

  3. Understanding of fundamental concepts in respect to software development, databases, IT operations, security, and networking.

  4. Managing and troubleshooting a computer information system.

  5. Understanding current business practices in computer systems technology.

Completion requirement

Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area. AAS degrees may require fewer overall flexible core credits.
