Data Analytics/Economics
Overview
Official Name of Program
Department(s) Sponsoring Program
Degree Designation
The Bachelor of Science degree in Data Analytics/Economics offers an excellent opportunity as a field of study. This can be seen from a strong labor market picture, together with a wide range of internship programs and opportunities, and rapidly growing enrollment trends at colleges and universities nationally and internationally. The skills attained through this program prepare students for entry-level positions across a number of industries and occupations, including healthcare, finance, public policy, real estate, environmental analysis, digital media, research and development, behavioral science, marketing, outcomes research, and banking. The program also prepares students who choose to go on to graduate studies, e.g., MBA, MPH, etc. Based upon several recent studies and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook, jobs in data analytics are in high demand and will continue to grow as the volume of data rapidly expands.
Courses cover core areas in economics, data visualization and mapping, and statistics. To develop and sharpen ones computational foundation, necessary for work in quantitative analysis, students are required to take core mathematics and computer systems technology (CST) courses. These courses provide students with the skills needed to think critically and to understand and clearly communicate regarding the increasingly complex and advanced economic concepts and theory of real-world problems. Finally, the program requires students to participate in a semester-long internship or to conduct a research project.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the program should be able to
develop a firm understanding of complex survey and non-survey data and expertise in working with large scale data sets.
develop ability to apply tools of econometrics and data science, and to use programming skills to analyze complex economic data and economic/social problems.
develop, strengthen and apply critical thinking skills to economic analysis.
develop and effectively apply mathematical and problem-solving skills.
develop ability to clearly and effectively communicate ideas orally and in writing.
recognize and to understand the importance of identifying and applying ethical research standards and practices.
build a strong foundation in statistics, econometrics, and computational economics.
build a foundation in fundamental economic concepts and theoretical frameworks.
develop ability to apply critical thinking skills to economic analysis employing complex datasets.

Requirements
Students applying for admission to the program must meet the college standards for admission into a baccalaureate program. Students who do not have the mathematics background required to enroll in MAT 1475 (Calculus I) but who otherwise meet the admission requirements can use the program elective credits to complete the pre-requisite mathematics courses.
Students transferring to the Data Analytics/Economics program must have:
A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
At least one semester of college-level English composition
Be eligible to enroll in MAT 1375 or higher
Exceptions can be made with the permission of the department chairperson.
Transfer students lacking any of these criteria must seek the approval of the Department Chair or Program Coordinator. College coursework in economics is strongly recommended for applicants but is not required for admission.
Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. In DegreeWorks, a double duty course displays and fulfills both requirements, but the credits count only once; the elective area will adjust automatically. Specific options for double duty courses may be listed here or noted in the degree map below.
Bachelor's degrees and AA and AS degrees require six flexible common core courses: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area.
All baccalaureate students starting at City Tech or transferring in with 30 or fewer credits, in addition to the common and flexible core courses, will also complete the following 12 credits: one course in speech/oral communication; one interdisciplinary course; and two additional liberal arts courses or, in BTech programs, additional liberal arts credits to reach a minimum total of 42 credits in general education.
In meeting general education requirements overall, students must take at least one advanced liberal arts course or two sequential courses in a world language. An advanced course is at the 2000 level or higher and has a prerequisite in the same or a closely related discipline. Examples of courses with prerequisites in closely related disciplines are: ECON 1101 and SOC 3301; PSY 1101 and SOC 2403. Transfer students with more than 30 earned credits or a prior degree have modified college option requirements, as noted on the Transfer Credit page.
Students at New York City College of Technology must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level, one from general education requirements and one from the major; and two additional courses designated WI for the baccalaureate level, one from general education and one from the major. Transfer students and those who have earned a prior degree may have part of this requirement waived. Please consult the Degree Requirements page for additional information.
Students must achieve a C or higher in all required courses in the major.
