Program features and benefits:
City Tech's education programs are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP)
Dual license option in Mathematics and Computer Science (with additional coursework, or 12 credits, in Computer Science)
Financial support or paid student teaching options through grants
High demand licensed area, job security, great benefits including health insurance, pension, and summer vacation
Learning Outcomes
Mathematics education graduates will be able to:
Demonstrate subject matter knowledge. (Content Knowledge)
Promote the learning and growth of all students by providing high quality and coherent instruction, designing and administering authentic and meaningful student assessments, analyzing student performance and growth data, using this data to improve instruction, providing students with constructive feedback on an on-going basis, and continuously refining learning objectives. (Curriculum, Planning, and Assessment)
Promote the learning and growth of all students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe and effective classroom environment, and promote mutual respect. (Teaching All Students)
Demonstrate professional behavior, seek and incorporate feedback from instructors and school mentors, collaborate with peers and school partners, and is engaged in continuous learning (Professional Culture and Responsibilities).
Advisement Information
Contact Mathematics Education Program Director, Professor Nadia Kennedy, at nkennedy@citytech.cuny.edu with questions related to the program.
We have several financial support opportunities, among which is the MBK Teacher Opportunity Corps II Scholarship.
Second STEM Teaching Certification Options for Mathematics Education Students
Mathematics Education students may prepare for an additional teaching certification in physics, biology, chemistry, or computer science while completing the B.S. in Mathematics Education.
These pathways help students complete the coursework needed for an additional certification and prepare for the Content Specialty Test (CST) in the second discipline. Students should expect to complete additional independent study and exam preparation beyond the listed courses.
Advisement and Planning
Students interested in an additional STEM teaching certification should contact the Program Director as early as possible. Early advisement helps students choose an appropriate pathway, plan coursework efficiently, and prepare for certification requirements.
Additional Classroom Teaching Certification
In New York State, students pursuing an additional classroom teaching certificate generally need:
At least 18 credits in physics, biology, or chemistry
At least 12 credits in computer science
Passing the CST in the additional discipline
Completion of all other applicable certification requirements (see the Program Director for full details)
Suggested Coursework by Discipline
The following courses support preparation for an additional teaching certification. Detailed semester-by-semester course maps are available upon request.
Computer Science
Students pursuing only the additional teaching certificate may complete the required computer science coursework. Students pursuing the Associate Degree in Computer Science should complete the full set of recommended courses.
MAT 1630 Introduction to Computational Science
MAT 2440 Discrete Structures and Algorithms I
MAT 2540 Discrete Structures and Algorithms II
CST 2403 C++ Programming Part I
CST 2503 C++ Programming Part II
Physics
PHYS 1441 General Physics I: Calculus-Based
PHYS 1442 General Physics II: Calculus-Based
PHYS 2443 Modern Physics
PHYS 3200 Electricity and Magnetism
Students interested in a Physics Minor should consult the Physics Department early.
Biology
BIO 1101 Biology I
BIO 1201 Biology II
BIO 2450 Genetics
BIO 2250 Evolution
Additional biology course selected in consultation with an advisor
Students preparing for the Biology CST should plan additional study in ecology and related CST competency areas.
Chemistry
CHEM 1110 General Chemistry I
CHEM 1210 General Chemistry II
CHEM 2223 Organic Chemistry I
CHEM 3312 Analytical Chemistry
Students preparing for the Chemistry CST may need supplemental preparation in areas such as nuclear chemistry.

Requirements
Students applying for admission must satisfy the college requirements for admission into a baccalaureate program and must be eligible to enroll in course. All applicants must submit an application, write an essay, and be interviewed by program faculty. Please complete the application form that can be accessed through this link: New York City College of Technology (City Tech) Math Education Student Application Form.
Prospective transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0* and have completed prerequisites for MAT 1475 or higher. They should consult with the Mathematics Department at the earliest possible point to be certain that they gain maximum transfer credit and that they enter the program with the requisite background. All students should be aware that the program requires a high level of math proficiency and that if they don’t meet the entry program requirements unprepared for the rigorous coursework they may need to successfully complete additional course work and prerequisites before they are able to enter the program and begin upper-level coursework in mathematics. This may add to the credits required for graduation.
*At the discretion of the program director or department chair, a student with a GPA lower than 3.0 may be admitted into the program.
Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. In DegreeWorks, a double duty course displays and fulfills both requirements, but the credits count only once; the elective area will adjust automatically. Specific options for double duty courses may be listed here or noted in the degree map below.”
Bachelor's degrees and AA and AS degrees require six flexible common core courses: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area.
All baccalaureate students starting at City Tech or transferring in with 30 or fewer credits, in addition to the common and flexible core courses, will also complete the following 12 credits: one course in speech/oral communication; one interdisciplinary course; and two additional liberal arts courses or, in BTech programs, additional liberal arts credits to reach a minimum total of 42 credits in general education.
In meeting general education requirements overall, students must take at least one advanced liberal arts course or two sequential courses in a world language. An advanced course is at the 2000 level or higher and has a prerequisite in the same or a closely related discipline. Examples of courses with prerequisites in closely related disciplines are: ECON 1101 and SOC 3301; PSY 1101 and SOC 2403. Transfer students with more than 30 earned credits or a prior degree have modified college option requirements, as noted on the Transfer Credit page.
Students at New York City College of Technology must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level, one from general education requirements and one from the major; and two additional courses designated WI for the baccalaureate level, one from general education and one from the major. Transfer students and those who have earned a prior degree may have part of this requirement waived. Please consult the Degree Requirements page for additional information.
Students must receive a grade of "C" or higher in each EDU, MAT or MEDU course taken in the major.
Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.7 to graduate.
Students must satisfy a foreign language requirement. The requirement may be met in any one of the following ways:
Successful completion of a 3-credit foreign language course at City Tech or transferred from another college.
Earning a score of 85 or higher on the New York State Regents examination in a foreign language.
A score of 4 or better on the advanced placement examination in a foreign language.
Satisfactory completion of a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test in a foreign language.
Graduation from a higher education institution with a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, in which the language of instruction was other than English.
